Urinary Tract:

Cats can develop a number of problems related to the bladder and urethra.  Diet is very important in maintaining a healthy urinary tract in most cats.  Most veterinarians recommend cat foods low in minerals (especially magnesium) and formulated to maintain urine pH of 6.2 – 6.6.  Many clinicians suggest feeding canned foods because dry foods are higher in fiber - fiber draws water as it travels through the bowel, creating more concentrated urine, especially if the cat doesn't drink enough water - and contain more minerals per Kcal of food than wet food.

The use of natural supplements that help acidify urine as well as prevent adherence of microorganisms to the bladder wall may be helpful in maintaining urinary tract function and health.
